Starlink’s first sixty: connectivity as the engine under multiplanetary

Sixty Starlink satellites rode a Falcon 9 into orbit, and the webcast made deployment look almost casual — a stack peeling apart above the Earth like the constellation was always going to be there. It is not casual. It is the funding engine thesis made physical: sell connectivity at planetary scale so the company can keep attacking the cost of getting off Earth.

I keep the Tesla parallel lightly in my head because it is the same habit, not the same product. Sustainable energy on the ground and cheaper access to space are both species-scale problems Elon picked because they matter, not because they were the easiest path to a quiet life. Starlink is the bit that can throw off cash while Starship and deep space stay hard. Connectivity for people who never had it, and a factory cadence that looks more like industry than a string of one-off miracles.

Reuse is what makes the economics even pretend to work. Fly the booster, land it, fly again, pack sixty birds instead of one precious payload and a champagne toast. Demo-1 proved the taxi can dock. Starlink proves the factory can pour metal and silicon into orbit on a schedule. Watching both threads at once is the Everyday Astronaut view: awe at the deployment, and a spreadsheet running quietly underneath.

The satellites are the visible part. The harder part is spectrum, ground stations, phased arrays, and not lighting up astronomers’ forums forever. Iterate in public applies here too — ship, learn, revise. The best part is no part still holds when the part is a whole constellation architecture.

What I want next is the human beat. Demo-2: Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on Crew Dragon, lifting off from Florida again, Americans on an American rocket to the Station with a SpaceX capsule under them. If Starlink is the engine under the business, that flight is the moment the taxi stops being theoretical. Next up: crew on Dragon, and the emotion that competence earns.
